76 Acres Remaining, 2024

Glass, Plastic balls, Fabric and Pillow Stuffing, Painted Glass Ornaments & Photographs of Archived Orange Crate Labels

Orange County was once home to 67,000 acres of orange groves. Through cooperative packing houses, orange cultivation in the 1920’s employed one third of the local workforce. The image of Valencia oranges closely represented the promotion of Southern California as a semi-tropical paradise and helped influence immigration. As the population increased in the county, orange groves were replaced with suburbia, leaving only 76 acres of orange groves left in Orange County. 76 Acres Remaining aims to connect the Fullerton arboretum with the citrus history that once played such a vital role in our community.
