Watering Hole, 2024

55 Gallon Steel Drums, Hose, PVC Conduit, & Hardware

The water hole is essential for the survival of animals in the wild. Its ephemeral nature impacts those that rely on migration, deeming the watering hole a prized commodity. This dependence on natural resources can be compared with the car-centric infrastructure that those living in Southern California rely on. Like animals on a migration, the constant marching of vehicles on the roads requires an abundance of natural resources. Watering Hole comments on this reliance on energy, and the negative impacts that energy production has on the environment. Energy production and consumption create greenhouse gasses that trap the heat from the sun in the atmosphere, pollute waterways with toxic metals and other hazardous waste, and create land pollution through disposal of millions of tons of poisonous coal ash annually. According to the US Energy Information Administration, Biomass, Wind, Hydro, Solar, and Geothermal only accounted for 21% of America’s total electricity in 2022. The oil drums in Watering Hole wander the land, relying on the destruction of natural resources for their survival.
